drical furnace tube of large diameter and short length with back connection and with small return tubes above. According to the size of boiler there are used one, two, three, four, or six furnace tubes. The single furnace is found inconvenient for cleaning as taking in too much cold air at once, loosing steam in the operation. The size of the boiler used has been gradually increased and so also the pressure until we find on shells 16 feet in diameter pressures as high as 90 pounds per square inch carried as the working pressure.
